Peru has plenty of vegetarian and vegan options too
Cusco and Lima are now home to several restaurants specializing in food without animal or even dairy products, as well as raw food.
Raw Cafe - Raw mini pizzas
Vegetarian and vegan recipes are prepared and presented with the same attention to detail that has won Peruvian cuisine global acclaim.
Peru’s acclaimed culinary renaissance isn’t just for meat-eaters. In recent years, various vegetarian and vegan restaurants have opened in Lima and Cusco, while many other restaurants offer delicious options for customers who wish to avoid meat, fish or dairy products. Thanks to Peru’s staggeringly diverse natural pantry, including everything from quinoa to rare Amazonian fruits you have never heard of, there is no shortage of nutritious, original and extremely tasty ingredients for chefs to play with here.
Quinoa Restaurant - Green Quinua pie with spinach and pesto
In Lima, the restaurant Quinoa has two locales, both in the district of San Isidro, offering all kinds of dishes but above all focused on wraps and salads, and specializing in recipes with the eponymous Andean grain. It is a Quinoa hallmark that the menu constantly changes as the kitchen prefers to use local in-season ingredients. Another great option, in the district of Miraflores is AlmaZen, which serves not just vegetarian but also organic food. And then there is Raw Café, in Miraflores, which, as the name suggests, specializes in raw food. It aims to offer at least 80% of each dish raw, and what is cooked is done so at a maximum heat of 42 C° to preserve the nutrients in the food.
Greens Organic - Bruschetta with fennel, tomato, olives and goat cheese
In Cusco and along the Sacred Valley, there are also a growing number of vegetarian and vegan options. The highlight is probably Greens Organic, a restaurant just one block from Cusco’s main square, which specializes in organic products sourced from local suppliers in the Sacred Valley using traditional, sustainable agricultural techniques. All the fruits used in its juices and salads come from its own garden in the Sacred Valley.
