Carnival is Coming

Of all the Carnival parties the world over, two of the most unique celebrations take place in… Peru?

From Rio to Venice, and New Orleans to Nice, there are certainly some special Carnival festivals around the world. Of these colourful and creative parties celebrating life, indigenous heritage, sexuality, rhythm and freedom, travellers could easily fill a bucket list with carnival destinations. As traveling trends swing towards off-the-beaten-path and less commodified, more authentic experiences, savvy travellers have begun to catch on to one of the grandest and least exploited festivals left.

Meanwhile, in Lima, the Carnival celebrations sing a more light-hearted and contemporary tune. The beachside city’s balmy summer lends itself well to street celebrations, and the Limeneans don’t take much convincing to get out and have a great time. Street celebrations are so common they appear impromptu, save for the bands, DJ’s, and food vendors that somehow coordinate to attract the neighbourhood. Water fights are a theme throughout the month, and it is acceptable for children to spray strangers with water guns, or bomb them with balloons from upper level windows.

It just so happens that February is shoulder-season for tourism in Peru, making it the perfect time to arrange an itinerary to Machu Picchu: avoiding the crowds and peak-season rates, and combining an already bucket-list trip with some of the best celebrations still unexplored by the west. Party ponchos available for purchase on site, so don’t forget your camera.
